Bob’s weekly take on top stories shaping faith, culture, and leadership
Early Education & Career
A Foundation of Faith and Leadership
Born in Sheldon, Iowa, as the youngest of eight, Bob Vander Plaats grew up in a family rooted in Christian values. His journey began at Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa, where faith and discipline shaped him. A basketball scholarship took him to Northwestern College in Orange City, where he earned a degree in education, followed by a master’s in educational leadership from Drake University.
Bob started his career investing in young lives—instilling the values of grit and godliness in his students. He rose to become principal at Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn High School and later Sheldon High School, setting him on a lifelong trajectory to train up the next generation in truth.
LIGHT FROM LUCAS
God’s Strength in Weakness
In 1993, Bob and his wife, Darla, welcomed their third son, Lucas, born with partial pachygyria lissencephaly—a severe brain disorder requiring lifelong care. Lucas passed in 2021 at age 28, becoming a beacon of God’s grace in their family which Bob shares in Light from Lucas.
Through sleepless nights and countless challenges, Bob and Darla leaned on their faith. Lucas didn’t just shape their family—he fueled Bob’s resolve to fight for the vulnerable, from the unborn to the overlooked.
POLITICAL MOVEMENT
A Warrior for Biblical Values
Bob’s faith couldn’t stay on the sidelines. He plunged into Iowa’s political arena, running for governor in 2002, 2006, and 2010, and serving as the Republican lieutenant governor nominee in 2006. His campaigns rallied believers around life, marriage, and liberty at a time when moral decline seemed to dominate the nation.
In 2010, he took the helm at The FAMiLY Leader, a powerhouse for biblical principles in government. His influence exploded nationally after successfully chairing Mike Huckabee’s campaign, delivering an Iowa caucus win—and later guiding Rick Santorum in 2012 and Ted Cruz in 2016 to decisive Iowa victories. Each win cemented his reputation as one of the most influential voices in mobilizing Christians to stand boldly in the public square.
TURNING IOWA
A Blueprint for Revival
Bob didn’t just talk about change—he made it happen. Once a swing state, Iowa is now a conservative stronghold thanks to years of consistent advocacy alongside the faithful work of others in the state.
In 2010, he spearheaded a campaign to oust three Iowa Supreme Court justices who legalized same-sex marriage, sending a thunderous message: God’s design won’t be mocked.
Bob and his team at The FAMiLY Leader have continued the fight—becoming a battering ram for pro-life wins, helping pass Iowa’s heartbeat law, and supporting biblical policies at all levels of government.
The Daniel Initiative
Taking the Fight Nationwide
Bob’s vision doesn’t stop at state lines. Through The FAMiLY Leader’s The Daniel Impact, he’s igniting a movement to replicate Iowa’s success across the nation.
Named for the prophet who stood firm in a pagan land, The Daniel Impact equips churches and believers to engage government with gospel courage and influence policy with biblical clarity.
Bob’s goal for this initiative, launched to expand the Church Ambassador Network, is a coalition of Daniels from coast to coast—uncompromising, prayerful, and victorious.
